Angelus Plaza is the largest affordable housing community for older adults in the nation. Angelus Plaza and The Agape Center, its senior activity center, opened in 1980. Angelus Plaza is located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles' historic Bunker Hill district, near Angel's Flight, Grand Central Market, California Plaza, Disney Concert Hall, and the Los Angeles Music Center.
The 1,093 one-bedroom apartments in five, high-rise towers encompass a diverse community of 1,300 adults who have an average age of 82.
The Agape Center is a six-story administration building that not only provides staff offices for Angelus Plaza but offers much needed services for the older adults living in downtown Los Angeles and surrounding communities.
A variety of programs and services are offered throughout the year which emphasize the importance of ongoing education, a healthy and active lifestyle, multi-cultural sharing, and intergenerational involvement. A Mini Mart, beauty salon/barber shop and The Tom Bradley Center for Health Care, operated by Good Samaritan Hospital, are also located in the center.
The activity center provides meeting rooms, a dining room, a Meals-on-Wheels site, library, classrooms, activity room, 250-seat auditorium and houses a Los Angeles Unified School District Continuation High School site. The Senior Activity Center is now the home of the Kay Martin Art Collection.
Angelus Plaza hosts an annual fundraiser, City View, to raise monies to fund the programs and services it provides to the more than 105,000 Los Angeles area seniors who use the center annually. This year's fundraiser will be on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 5:30pm. For more information, please e-mail angelusplaza@rhf.org.
